Fund-Raising the Roof! The roof of our lovely housing co-op is leaking - can you help us fix it?
We are a housing co-operative in Manchester, focussed on providing low-cost long-term housing for queer and trans people. Since 2015 we've been living in a big old Victorian house / former council hostel in Openshaw. Right now there are ten of us and one cat in the house.
Sadly due to the age of the house, there are a few structural issues that have come to light. Our roof has been getting steadily leakier for the last decade, which has given us a black mould problem in the attic and a massive heating bill every winter. There are a few windows that don't shut properly, a couple of holes in the walls, and although we've got some strong DIYers, we're not quite trained to go up a scaffold. We would love to be able to open up the house and get more involved in the community, and that's why we're asking for your help.
This summer, we're hosting a whole bunch of events both at the co-op and around Manchester. We're hoping to reach out to other co-op groups and the wider queer community to build a community of our own. The co-op was started as a community project, and we're finally getting back to our roots.
We're not just fundraising for a roof (although we desperately need one!), but to try and build friendships and connections in Manchester. If we reach our goal, we'll be able to put our time and effort towards opening up the co-op in other ways. For example we could be able to offer office or meeting space to other community groups, fundraise for charities close to our hearts, or put on events to bring people together.
