Foxton Canal Museum tells the story of the remarkable Foxton Inclined Plane Boat Lift, the famous Foxton Locks, and the people whose lives were shaped by this unique place. The museum is located in the heart of the historic site and run by the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust, a registered charity dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of the site—from its roots in the Industrial Revolution to the present day.
Foxton Canal Museum is at a pivotal moment in its almost 40 year history. After a summer of drought, impacting visitor numbers, our Museum continues to work with local communities, groups and visitors from around the globe. We are also proud to be looking to the future of the Museum with plans to improve our building and expand the delivery of our programmes further afield. Support us now to continue our work to engage, inform and entertain the growing community of visitors and see our 5 year vision for Foxton Canal Museum come to life.
Built brick-by-brick by hard working volunteers in the 1980s, Foxton Canal Museum has become a hub for changing, engaging history exhibitions and as a venue for local and waterway's artists. We work with diverse audiences including: school pupils both at the museum and in schools, engaging young minds in colourful canal history; families who enjoy our site trails and competitions; individuals who share their memories for our archives; and visitors from around the globe who take a guided tour of the Foxton inclined plane boat lift, the only Leicestershire piece of 20th Century industrial heritage ranked as a scheduled monument by Historic England.
We are an accredited Museum, run as a charity, funded by donations and grants, focused on building connections with people by sharing the histories of the inclined plane boat lift and the story of the canals. Our work is delivered by volunteers and paid staff, onsite, off site and digitally. Your donations will support both the ongoing programmes and ensure new work takes place at this nationally important site.
