Are MPs allowed to mislead Parliament and thereby the Public about Climate Change - or could that be a Contempt of Parliament ?
I have been generally aware as a scientist that starting from the work of Arrhenius in 1896, the scientific literature tells us that carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels will cause global warming , but like many of us I suspect , I did not realize just how serious this problem is until this summer , and the thing which struck me personally most forcibly was the fact that in France and Spain over 300,000 people were evacuated from their homes this summer because of the risk from fires out of control. Co-incidentally as an inventor I have been working on a strategy which could bring the cost of electricity down in the UK and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels to balance the Grid , and this has led me to study the debate on how we should deal with global warming - which in turn led me to examine and consider the veracity of statements made by our MPs on the subject. Now it turns out that there are UK MPs who are using words such as "stupid net zero ", along with a claim that the growth of renewable generating capacity has in effect led to an increase in the price of UK electricity . Such a claim appears to have no basis in fact , so the question arises , would such a claim , if made in the Commons, amount to a Contempt of Parliament?
According to Erskine May, a Member who deliberately misleads the House may be in contempt of Parliament , and the correct procedure is to write and ask the Speaker .
We are starting this crowdfunder to see whether there are others of like mind, and we will raise a little money to research the question of Contempt of Parliament more fully ,and also seek opinions on whether an MP who makes untrue statements about Global Warming can be prosecuted for Misconduct
