This is a BIG battle. We already have been campaigning for 4 1/2 years and we expect it will take longer. But we are in it for the long haul, and we will not stop until we are heard, seen, and properly apologised to and acknowledged by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Parliament. We want the right to apply for redress under Scotland's Redress Scheme, although not all of us want to apply, and we don't want money. We DO want a public apology and
‘Fornethy Survivors’ are a group of women who were victims of child physical, mental and sexual abuse, perpetrated by the staff at Fornethy Residential School who were employed by Glasgow Council from the 1960’s until the 1990’s.
Pupils who attended were sent to Fornethy Residential School on the promise of a ‘holiday-like’ experience, that their families could not personally provide due to illness and other personal reasons.
While the survivors attended the school, they were the subject of vile abuse - including being beaten, force-fed and sexually assaulted daily by the people who were supposed to protect and ensure the highest level of care for them. They were denied contact with family members during their stay, with mail intercepted and responses written under strict instruction by staff. The only escape for victims was when their residency would finally would come to an end.
The crimes committed by these staff were harrowing, and have impacted the entire lives of many women whilst the perpetrators got off free.
It’s time the perpetrators and Glasgow City Council were held to account and took responsibility for what happened to these young girls. There is no place for these crimes in any but especially modern society. The Fornethy Survivors Group are campaigning tirelessly for the justice they deserve through fundraising for regular active protests, meetings with parliamentary officials, raising awareness online and much, much more.
