To reduce the effect of climate change we will use parish owned land for community planting schemes to create a positive natural environment

by Alastair Tinto in Drakewalls, England, United Kingdom

 New stretch target

We will be able to expand our planting schemes  to connecti schemes across the parish so we have a network natural corridors. We will be able to produce materials for landowners to encourage them to participate. We will produce educational material on the local environment for schools.

Climate change is scary

Climate change is scary. It means different things to different people, but one thing is for sure: it’s happening. The planet is in danger.  In our parish green areas are being built on and hedgerows and trees lost.  We have an air quality problem in one of our villages.  We need to halt this destructive pattern so that we can tell our grandchildren we tried.

We need at least £2000 and people power to help pay for and plant a variety of native plants that will help us reduce our carbon footprint and make our communities greener and healthier.

Think Global, Act Local

Engaging with the communities in our parish we will identify community owned assets and publicly accessed areas which can be used to generate a positive natural environment that offsets the negative effects of climate change.  We will develop appropriate community planting schemes within the landscape to reflect the distinctiveness of the local area.

The Parish Council owns over 13 acres of land. We will look at sites in Gunnislake, Calstock, Harrowbarrow, St Ann’s Chapel, Chilsworthy and anywhere else within our Parish that we think is suitable.  We will ensure that our schemes enhance and complement biodiversity. None of the public amenities, such as recreation facilities, views or air ambulance landing sites will be lost through this project.

We will work out low key, local maintenance and management schemes to ensure the areas thrive for many years to come.

We will look to schools, community organisations and private landowners to build on this initiative making our Parish a green sustainable harmonious environment to live in, work in and visit.

We will experience the positive benefits of being involved in the natural environment enhancing not only the planet’s health but our own emotional and physical health and wellbeing.

Purchase Trees and Plants

We need at least £2000 to purchase trees and other plants – we need people power to help with the planting and long-term maintenance of the community copses and hedgerows and wildlife corridors.

Crowdfunding is important to use because it gives our community the chance to be involved in the development of the project from the very beginning.  The money raised will allow us to work with community groups and to fund the purchase of materials and trees along with the equipment necessary to complete the planting.

Our target is to complete the planting by May 2021 so that we catch the next planting season.

The Parish Council

Calstock Parish Council is a rural area – we have 18 councillors covering 5 areas and a population of over 6000.

We are one of the biggest parishes in Cornwall.

We have responded to the threat of Climate Change and have declared a Climate Emergency.  We set up an Environment and Climate Emergency (ECE) working party to look at what measures could be taken to offset some of the damage being caused by vehicles, property development and pollution.  The ECE Working Party is made up of parish councillors, parish council staff and community members.

We applied to the Forests for Cornwall Projects that Matter fund to help with some of our practical ideas and to help us raise money to purchase trees and plants.

We have some amazing rewards for your pledges – follow our social media for more detailed descriptions of how we have used your money and support.  We really hope you will support this campaign – every penny and offer of help counts.  We are choosing the “All or Nothing” Crowdfunder option which means if we don’t achieve our target, we get absolutely nothing.

In ten years’ time, when people ask you what you did to help improve the climate you can say you helped.

  • You pledged money to purchase trees.
  • You pledged money to buy equipment to plant the trees.
  • You helped to plant the trees.
  • You helped to look after the trees.
  • You Did Something. Something really important. Something really important for you, your community, your planet.
