Hi friends! I'm Elspeth Anne, an independent artist creating experimental folk music. I've been performing and recording as a solo artist for over 15 years. Based on the Welsh-English border, my practice is informed by the wilder landscape and the liminal undercurrent of the area.
My work has been championed recently by artist and folk researcher Ben Edge and Lankums' Ian Lynch on his podcast Fire Draw Near. My last album, Mercy Me (2022) received highly favourable reviews from the Guardian, KLOF mag and TradFolk, with KLOF mag describing it as “an album full of ideas, but more importantly, full of feeling, a raw, moving triumph.” I've supported artists such as One Leg One Eye, Stick in the Wheel and Richard Dawson and worked on commissions from artists including Lucy Wright. All this to say, I've worked really hard to get some momentum going and it's the perfect time to make a new album!

The Album

The album will be a collection of original and traditional songs that speak to themes of home and belonging, ancestral ties and listening to the land. It will feature a lot of bleak themes, big drones, acoustic and electronic instruments and field recordings. I've spent the past few years working with particular old songs from Britain and Ireland that resonate with me, and weaving freshly written ones into their world.

I'll be working with Ian and Nicola from From Here Records / Stick in the Wheel, which is exciting as I'm a big fan of their work. What I do is very different but in the same vein, so I reckon it'll work nicely.

The Money

£5,234 will cover the recording, mixing, mastering, my travel costs and accomodation, and CD manufacturing.

I really apreciate anything you can donate towards this - feel free to choose a reward or just pledge whatever amount you want. Whether you donate or not, sharing this campaign will also make a big difference ✨

If I get more than the inital goal I'll be using it towards:

Promoting the album - music videos, social media campaigns, PR

Tapes! - short run of the album on tape

Organising a launch gig

The Rewards

I've kept the rewards for this project very simple and easy to deliver (if I receive enough funding) so I can focus fully on creating the album. Please note if I only manage to raise a small fraction of the funds the project may take longer/ not be the original idea set out here. I will make a recording and if you choose a reward you will get a copy of it. I know this is obvious with crowdfunding but I want to make it clear it's not the same as pre-ordering an album. 😊

Please be aware the Knitted Square Artwork and Painting rewards are UK only.
