Feeding Coventry is a small charity with big ambitions. Last year we provided nearly 10,000 food parcels through our social supermarket and emergency food support. But did you also know we have a Sports Hall and changing facilities that are in much need of a revamp?
We host children's activities, youth clubs and adult sports at our Community centre and know how important it is for everyone to have access to physical activity and sports. Sport brings people together and never was this more important than now with so many of our local families struggling with the cost of living.
We want to modernise our sports hall and facilities, to make them safer, more usable and accessible for the whole community in Foleshill and across the city.
Foleshill Community Centre was built in the 1940s and has always been at the heart of the community - it’s seen generations of sports men and women take part in all kinds of activities from Judo to Weightlifting to Football, but sadly our centre has not been updated since the 1970s. The sports hall is only accessible via a steep staircase, many of the windows are broken and boarded up and the changing rooms are not fit for use.
Can you help us bring sports back to life in Foleshill for the next generation?
It’s going to cost around £350,000 to fully redevelop our facilities, but before we can get started, we need plans and a feasibility study to make sure our building can continue to support our community now and in the future. Our priority is to raise enough money to get our plans drawn up, carry out design work, surveys and tender for the the work to be completed. This might not sound that exciting but its such an important part being able to create a well designed facility for the people of Foleshill. The first £10,000 raised would go towards this really important work.
Our ambition is then to refurbish the changing facilities, toilets and the hall so it can be used by even more groups and people in the community. If we can raise £10,000 from a minimum of 100 supporters, we hope to secure up to an additional £10,000 from Sport England, making a great leap towards our goal.
Foleshill is a youthful neighbourhood with a high proportion of children and young people - however it is also a place where many children need free school meals and families struggle with the cost of living. We want to make our facilities available to people in our community regardless of how much money they have in their pockets, that's why most of our activities are free to members of our community centre.
This project will especially benefit children and young people, parents with pushchairs and wheelchair users, or people who need support to get around. We think this is really important because good facilities should be accessible to everyone.
The values of our small charity are to create a space the enables the community to take ownership of their space and put their ideas into action. The vision of the Commonwealth Games 2022 is to promote fairness and social inclusion, and there is no place better to keep this vision alive than in the heart of Foleshill's diverse community. This project will leave a legacy of long lasting change and access to better sports facilities in a community that needs it most.
We know there is sporting talent in our community especially in wrestling where we already have groups gaining recognition. Can you help us bring sporting dreams to life in Coventry? Here are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality...
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
