Over the past 9 years, Shambala’s ‘Flags For…’ campaigns have raised over £60,000 for incredible causes.

This year, we’re raising funds for Practical Action and the work they are doing to radically improve the lives of people on the frontlines of poverty and climate change in Sudan.

For every donation received, Shambala will fly a string of prayer flags from the Solasta Stage, creating a beautiful symbol of our love and support all festival long.

ABOUT PRACTICAL ACTION

Practical Action is an international development charity. They work alongside local people to build sustainable, long-term solutions in Sudan and in other places around the world affected by poverty and climate change.

For almost sixty years, Practical Action has stood with people facing the world’s toughest challenges. Unlike short-term aid that quickly runs out, their projects mean people can access tools and skills that keep working long into the future.

SUDAN: THE FORGOTTEN CRISIS AFFECTING MILLIONS OF PEOPLE

Sudan is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world - but you probably haven’t seen much about it on the news.

Since April 2023, millions of people have been caught in a brutal civil war. More than ten million have been forced from their homes. Over half the population is going hungry. And the climate crisis - bringing droughts and unpredictable rains - is making things even tougher.

SOLUTIONS THAT LAST BEYOND THE HEADLINES

Practical Action’s dedicated team is on the ground in Darfur, Kassala, and Blue Nile, putting to work solutions that solve immediate problems and lay foundations for the future.

  • In Darfur, despite the ongoing conflict, the Practical Action team have successfully installed solar-powered water systems that now supply clean water to more than 70,000 people, including refugees. This work prevents disease outbreaks and reduces tension over scarce resources.
  • In Blue Nile, they've supported over 35 farming groups so people can cultivate affordable, nutritious crops like sweet potatoes to feed their families. These initiatives create tangible, practical benefits while also bringing hope, normality, and resilience to people who need it.

“Before, I couldn’t grow enough to feed my family. Now, I’ve planted trees to protect the soil, I have solar irrigation and more knowledge about farming. I can grow enough for us all to eat with extra to sell. I use the money to pay for school and healthcare for my family.” - Suliman Hamen Abull, a Farmer in North Darfur

INTERNATIONAL AID CUTS THREATEN PROGRESS

But now, Practical Action’s work is under threat. The US government recently slashed its international aid budget by 83%. The UK government has made similar cuts. These political choices overlook human suffering and have put their vital projects at risk. But Practical Action refuses to turn away from the people who need them most.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

The combination of climate change, civil war, politics and poverty can leave us all feeling helpless, but this is a chance to do something positive.

Your support sends a powerful message: people facing poverty are not forgotten. It means Practical Action can continue their essential work - delivering materials through conflict zones, adapting projects quickly to changing conditions, and staying resilient despite setbacks.

At Shambala, we’re proud to share Practical Action’s vision of practical, creative solutions that challenge the status quo, tackle hunger and support gender equality.

With your help, they can install more solar-powered water systems, train more farmers and plant more trees to prevent desertification. Even if the world looks away, together we can ensure this life-changing work continues.

Dig deep, team - let's show what Shambalans can do! x
