Team Great Britain 2024 - Our Mission to FIRST Global: Representing the UK with Pride and Purpose
This year, we are thrilled and honored to announce that our all-girl team, Team Ultraviolet from BSG Robotics, has been selected to be Team Great Britain at the 2024 FIRST Global Challenge in Athens from September 26th to 29th. This prestigious event brings together young innovators from over 190 countries, aiming to address the world’s most pressing challenges through STEM.
The FIRST Global Challenge: More Than Just a Competition

The FIRST Global Challenge is an international robotics competition that not only showcases technical prowess but also fosters international collaboration and cultural exchange. Each year, teams are tasked with solving a global issue through robotics, embodying the spirit of innovation and diplomacy. This year's theme emphasises food security and feeding the world’s people, encouraging young minds to develop solutions for a greener and more sustainable future.

As part of their participation, our team will engage in a diplomatic mission to build bridges with peers from around the world, promoting understanding and cooperation. They will act as ambassadors for the UK, showcasing our nation’s commitment to STEM education and innovation.

Meet Team Great Britain: Pioneers in STEM
Team Great Britain is not just any robotics team; they are the first all-girl team to represent the UK at the FIRST Global Challenge. Over the past two years as members of Team Ultraviolet in the UK’s FIRST Tech Challenge, these dedicated young women have honed their skills in mechanical engineering, coding, marketing, and business strategy. Their hard work and determination have not only led them to win the UK National Inspire Award 2024 but also secured their place on the global stage. Their journey so far has been captured in a BBC Click Feature: Robot Challenge, first broadcast on the 6th July 2024: LINK IS HERE
Their journey has been marked by significant achievements, including:
- Doubling the number of girls studying design technology and significantly increasing the uptake of computer science at their school.
- Helping support the FIRST Tech Challenge UK Southwest network of teams to become five times bigger this season.
- Delivering impactful STEM outreach programs to hundreds of primary school children in their local community.
- Developing innovative solutions that address real-world problems, demonstrating their capability and creativity.
Becoming Influential Ambassadors
Our team is passionate about more than just robotics; they are committed to making a positive impact on the world. By participating in the 2024 FIRST Global Challenge, they aim to:
- Build bridges with other nations, fostering international friendships and collaborations.
- Act as role models and inspire other young women and girls in the UK to pursue STEM careers.
- Promote the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields.
Their participation will highlight the potential of young women in STEM and encourage a new generation of innovators.
How Your Support Will Make a Difference
We are seeking to raise at least £10,000 to cover the costs associated with this incredible opportunity. The funds will be used for:
- Transport and trip to Athens: Ensuring the team can travel safely to and from the competition.
- Kit and clothing to enable us to support our full participation.
- Outreach and Ambassadorship Activities: Supporting the team’s efforts to engage with other teams and share their experiences with the wider community.
- And further our work to engage even more girls and disadvantaged children in our robotics programme in SW UK.
Your contribution will not only help our team compete but also support their mission to inspire and connect with others. By donating, you are investing in the future of STEM and helping to build a better tomorrow.
In addition to this, depending on the amount of sponsorship. Your organisation will be publicly acknowledged as supporting the 2024 FIRST Global Team Great Britain in some way, which can include having the logo on our kits and on our competing robot on the international stage (see Rewards for more details).
