In the 3 years since we first set up Keep Prisons Single Sex - at Kate's kitchen table, with a box of stickers & a Twitter account - we have grown into a respected organisation to be reckoned with.
Our expertise is actively sought by government departments - including the Ministry of Justice & Home Office - by parliamentary committees, by police forces and by legislators in both Westminster and Holyrood. What we say matters at the highest levels nationally.
At Tory Conference last year, the Secretary of State for Justice announced a new Ministry of Justice policy that would place further restrictions on the ability of male prisoners to be housed alongside women. This policy, which came into effect at the end of March, is not perfect. But it is better than anything we had thought possible.
This policy, which has international significance as the most recent policy on the management of transgender prisoners globally, is the direct result of our work and your support.
At Tory Conference this year, the Home Secretary announced plans for new legislation that would prevent sex offenders from changing their gender. Again, we have shifted political opinion: our work was quoted in the House of Commons debate on sex offender name change.
What we do works. We get results.
There is much to be done, particularly in Scotland which continues to be an important focal point. Our work continues not just for prisons, but for data collection on offending, police searching of detainees, risk assessment, DBS and Disclosure Scotland checks. And, of course, supporting individual prisoners.
In all these areas we will always put safeguarding first and will never compromise on the importance of sex registered at birth.
None of us take a salary meaning that every penny we get is spent on the campaign, whether that is instructing barristers, producing a leaflet, attending a conference or visiting someone in prison.
We are committed to making sure that everything we provide is free: we never want to have to charge to attend our events, for our materials or to access any of our information by making things "subscription only".
We get results. Please support us, so our work can continue.
