Aim
Stockport Language Centre CIC delivers FREE ONLINE English lessons to adults in Greater Manchester who have no other option.
I spent years as a Universal Credit Work Coach in Stockport. I sat across the desk from people who wanted to work, wanted to contribute, wanted to build a life here — but couldn't get past the language barrier. Some of them were sanctioned because they couldn't explain themselves in English. Not because they didn't try. Because no one had taught them.
The waiting list for adult English classes in Greater Manchester hit over 1,000 people. Stockport College, the WEA, St John's Centre — all oversubscribed. The places simply don't exist.
So in February 2026, I registered Stockport Language Centre CIC. Not a business. A Community Interest Company, locked by law to its social purpose. Every penny raised goes into delivering free English lessons to the adults who need them most.
We teach online, via Microsoft Teams. No travel barriers. No childcare clashes. No waiting for a physical seat. Our 10-week rolling programme covers the English that actually matters — UC appointments, GP visits, job interviews, school parents' evenings. Real language for real life.
This campaign funds our first two pilot cohorts — 24 learner places from October 2026. The National Lottery has also received our application for £9,300 to support this work. Your donations complement that bid and show funders that our community believes in what we're doing.
£10 covers a learner's materials for a week. £25 funds a teaching session. £100 puts someone through the first half of the programme.
