The pandemic and cost of living crisis has hit the BAME community, those living in poverty and women hardest and more support is needed.
Pendle Women's Forum has been working in the local community for almost 25 years. Our aim is to empower women through education, training, arts and creativity and to reduce poverty, social-isolation and improve mental health.
From running creative and wellness classes to supporting women in learning English and into employment we want to ensure women's life-chances are better and enable women from poor and marginalised communities to self-advocacy.
Many of the women we support are of Pakistani heritage and face multiple barriers including:
Lack of English language skills
Racism and racial inequity
Cultural issues
Poor mental health
Lack of education
Poor and / or unsafe housing
Poverty and economic activity
Social Isolation
Many come from Whitefield, Pendle which is the most deprived ward in England. The cost of living crisis and war in Ukraine has also seen an increase in demand from Ukranian and other ethnicities and we are open to all.
We take a holistic approach from providing financial education, budgeting, claiming benefits and entitlements to numeracy skills, cooking on a budget and our ultimate aim is access to employment and financial independence.
