Who are and what we need to achieve
The Icelandic Cricket Association has continued to grow in recent years, despite all the challenges of playing the sport up here in the land of 'fire and ice' We now have five clubs and our national team have been in winter training to play in the Euro Cup in July 2025 in Warsaw. This is a multi-nation T20 tournament involving ourselves, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. All of us are budding International Cricket Council (ICC) Associate Members, and taking part in events like this can help to show the ICC that our team is ready. As well as this, we also need to develop women's and youth cricket further in order to tick the last of the ICC's boxes.
Our funding challenge
If only it was straight-forward to reach these goals! In a competitive sports environment here, the Icelandic Government and Sports Authorities will not fund our efforts until we reach ICC Associate Membership status. Meanwhile, the ICC will not fund us to help us get there. Corporate sponsorship of our national team has also been impossible without the Associate Member status. A classic chicken and egg problem!
What we seek
We wish to become the first crowdfunded ICC Associate Member in history. With the aid of our fantastic online fan-base, we seek 20,000 GBP (3.5 million ISK) to cover the costs of entry, travel and accommodation for the Euro Cup 2025, as well as the funding to train our young cricketers and women so that we have sufficient development to satisfy all ICC associate membership criteria. Any additional funds that we raised would go into improving the infrastructure of domestic cricket here, such as sightscreens, pitch covers, nets, bowling machines etc. This competition will let us know where we stand as a national team, as we transition towards becoming an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council. We intend to apply to become an Associate Member in the next two years and these developments are crucial milestones in this pursuit.
