Ernesettle Discover Shack

 In October 2014 a small and dedicated team of students joined together and 'visioned' a new outdoor classroom area for the school.

After consulting with the children, summer 2015 saw the opening up of the top meadow as an outdoor learning area. An oak story circle and a series of dens in the hazel coppice inspired the children to play and learn.

Their interest in nature was obvious and it seemed fitting to capitalise on their enthusiasm by developing the area further. We want to support the teaching team by giving them a proper outdoor classroom.

We're calling this the 'Discovery Shack' and see it as an inside outside construction. A big shed on stilts, with veranda and bird hide opening out into the woods behind. A solid frame, clad with interesting locally sourced materials that will evoke story and enchantment. The walls will become a gallery of factual resources helping them to get to grips with nature's fascinating life processes, an irresistible pathway into science.

We want to reward their hunger for learning about the world around them, with 4 beautiful information boards, these will depict favourite wild flowers, local birds, local animals and trees. They will be fixed to the fencing and offer the children a chance to begin to recognise the amazing diversity on their doorsteps.
