Championing a new project to support retaining girls in education for The Zuri Project. https://www.zuriproject.co.uk/
Currently, up to 54% of girls will drop out of school before finishing.
Starting your period, finding your way through school and understanding your own body generally feels like falling down the stairs, head first, on fire, carrying a box of marbles and hoping you somehow land on your feet with little more than a bruise.
Add in the unavailability of affordable, quality menstrual products, a favourability to educate boys and a lack of education on your own body - getting to and staying in school becomes climbing Everest.
This project is about addressing the root causes to drop-out rates of girls in school, giving equality in education a fighting chance.
Working in Kihembe, Uganda, we want to improve the retention rates of girls of all ages. After raising concerns from local staff members and conducting research with the community, we are focusing on 3 mains causes to drop-out rates;
This is a long-term, ever-changing project, lead by the proprietors of the community to understand what works best for them. The initial funds raised go towards;
- The development of practical based curriculum for boys and girls to get a new understanding of bodily changes through puberty
- In country staff costs; including the support of female project managers
- Initial resource costs such as materials for sanitary products and sewing machines
- Setting up and running the first business facilitation
As a small charity, The Zuri Project cherishes any donations and is always put to good use. All of the funds raised are sent directly to our partners in Uganda to facilitate locally led development projects.
