Aim

The project aims to capture and celebrate this important part of working-class women’s history through the publication of a book (and more)

In October 2018, a demonstration of more than 8,000, mostly women, took to the streets of Glasgow and brought the city to a standstill. Cleaners, care workers, teaching assistants, and others employed by Glasgow City Council, in predominately female roles, walked out of their workplaces and took part in one of the most significant strikes in recent UK history. The crux of the dispute was historic pay inequality and the introduction of a job evaluation scheme which further embedded inequalities. In response, Glasgow’s women organised, fought back, and won.

The Equal Pay: Glasgow’s Women on Strike project will document and celebrate the Glasgow Equal Pay strike through a series of interconnected creative outputs, ensuring that this important part of working-class women's history is captured, and celebrated, for decades to come. Your donations will contribute toward:

  • The commissioning of a banner celebrating the strike.
  • Collecting oral histories of women who took part in the industrial action.
  • The creation of a digital archive where recordings & other material will be hosted.
  • The publication of a book on the 2018 Glasgow Equal Pay Strike, based on the narratives of the women who participated in the dispute.

Early contributors to the Crowdfunder will be able to preorder a limited first-edition copy of the book, ‘Equal Pay or We Walk Away’: The Story of Glasgow’s Historic Equal Pay Dispute, as a reward.
