We will increase our provision to more schools. To more children.
We will increase our provision to more schools. To more children.
In the UK 1 in 5 children do not have a book at home. We aim to balance out that inequity. We aim to get a book to every child.
1 in 5 children in the UK do not have access to a book at home. That's nearly 1 million children. Those from deprived backgrounds have been hit hardest. However, this problem will only worsen amidst the cost of living crisis.
Over 14.5 million people in the UK currently live in poverty. Over 4.3 million of those are children. That's more than the population of London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool combined. 51% of parents have already said that books are too expensive, and that they are something that they simply cannot afford.
This lack of literacy at home drives the inequality gap. Children from deprived backgrounds will fall further behind their more affluent counterparts. Academically children with poor literacy skills struggle in all subjects. This could be remedied with early literacy provision. Every child deserves to succeed, every child deserves to read, every child deserves access to a book they can call their own. Illiteracy should be history.
This project will spend donations on books. It aims to get every school aged child a book of their own. It will work with schools in deprived areas. Some of the money raised will also go towards torches, so that the child can still read without having to worry about the cost of electricity.
