More Positive Me is a Community Interest Company with its main aims to empower those who have experienced domestic abuse. Not everyone realises they are or have experienced domestic abuse. The impacts are long term, including low self esteem, trauma & complex Ptsd. Our course empowers people to rebuild their lives, grow their self belief and turn their lives around.
Domestic Abuse is a hidden crime. Even when reported in newspapers, the words 'domestic abuse' are not used. Two women a week are murdered in the UK by a partner, ex partner or family member. This rose to 5 a week through the first COVID lockdown. One man a month is murdered, 30 people take their on lives a month, due to domestic abuse. Those that survive are left with low self esteem, trying to rebuild their lives.
My name is Jeanette, I am a director at More Positive Me and in 2010 I left my abuser with little more than I could carry and started the journey to rebuilding my life.
More Positive Me is about empowerment and we have a two pronged approach to this. Myself & my colleague Debbie deliver Empowerment After Domestic Abuse, a life changing course, to everyone impacted by domestic abuse and we educate local businesses with the J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative encouraging them to hold a safe space for victims to access support & resources that I never had available to me on my journey.
Making the course available online and as a workbook helps reach more people. But we have to say, the real magic, peer bonding, light bulb moments, safe space and being heard and understood happens with the live face to face courses. The funding we are seeking here is to deliver face to face courses across Devon. The more money we raise, the more courses we can deliver.
"At the end of 2019, I was at my wits end and in despair. I had just had a failed attempt at therapy which was terminated due to my inability to cope with my emotions. Quite ironic I thought as that’s why I had reached out in the first place. A lifetime of suppressed trauma had pushed me from cycle of abuse to another. Finally I hit rock bottom. By chance I came a cross More Positive Me. I referred myself and began the pattern changing course in January.
Jeanette and Debbie gave me something I have never received before from any service. From GP, therapy to Social services. An understanding and knowledge and a non judgmental approach of the trauma I had been through from childhood to adulthood suffering abuse and domestic abuse. And how this has had an ongoing affect on my life, emotions and life choices I have made.
Suddenly I have been handed hope. That what I have endured will not always be me. I have the power within me to change these patterns of belief. By the methods we have been taught. I didn’t expect the change to come so quickly. It is as if a light has been turned back on within my soul.
I will be forever grateful for the support, encouragement, knowledge and non judgmental kindness I have received and the ongoing support and bond with all the ladies I met.
My self esteem and confidence is rising and I look forward to the ongoing discovery of a ‘more positive me’ and future."
