Replacement of worn out boat shed doors
Mumbles Yacht Club, incorporating the Mumbles Amateur Rowing Club have an impressive combined history of 216 years of making safe and enjoyable sailing and rowing accessible to the Community in Swansea bay! The original club actually began through fundraising - local volunteers chipped in what they could afford, and other efforts ranged from holding raffles with prizes such as a Chicken dinner to someone donating an entire roof!
The money raised helped to furnish and equip the club to make sailing possible for young and old from all backgrounds. Now in 2021 we find ourselves again in need of funds to help keep the tradition alive (now including rowing and sculling) so that the community can access water sport to continue to build on the past successes and reach out to the future to meet new demands. We need to keep our sailing and rowing boats in good condition on the water but at the same time doing the necessary urgent repairs and maintenance of our buildings and equipment such as fire safety, boat shed doors and changing room renovations alongside improved disabled access.
Whilst our volunteers will continue to provide low cost youth and adult training, aswell as staging a number of national and international events bringing visitors to the area, we have like so many organisations and individuals suffered financially during the pandemic. This included the cancellation of the main youth training week in the summer, known as Newts’ week, due to a Covid outbreak; general revenue is also down due to the periods of closure of the clubhouse and a general reticence to come to the club to socialise.
As a result, we find ourselves short of revenue to fund any capital outlay and are asking for help for a programme of much-needed improvements. We firmly believe that the club is a strong part of the community and that the sailing and rowing activities are a positive addition to the Mumbles and Swansea Bay scene. We host Community events such as Macmillan coffee mornings and the annual RNLI Christmas party; the club is also used for registration for Mumbles Triathlon and the RNLI Raft Race; we are also providing space for a local choir's rehearsals this year. The fire safety measures will make the place alot safer to use and we will be able to offer the club more widely to any organisation sponsored by a member as a result.
Our vision is that the club becomes a community watersports hub for the area and the recent rowing addition underlines that. We believe that social membership is also an important part of our offering to allow the wider community to enjoy the club's facilities and participate in or watch the busy programme of events. However, in order to keep this ambition alive and make it inclusive, we need to modernise and improve the fabric of the club to modern standards and improve access for those with mobility issues
We are aiming to raise £5k for immediate improvements to fire safety as our first project, with a stretch target of £10k to allow replacement of the worn out boat shed doors; we hope to follow this with further projects for improvements to accessibility to the club and the changing areas.
The MYC is managed by a group of volunteers giving their time and resources. We need help from members and the wider community to support this effort and ensure a strong future for the club that so many have worked for. We are determined to provide access to the Bay for all our members and support those wishing to become involved. Please support MYC!
