Who I am and why I’m standing
I’m Cara McKee. I grew up in Yorkshire but moved to Scotland in 2003, to do my dream job, working as a government social researcher, but like lots of other people, I couldn’t manage to balance childcare with work and in the end I had to leave it. More recently, I've been running a village library, there I’ve become deeply familiar with the everyday issues people face – and the way underfunding for local authorities is hollowing out public services, and having a damaging effect on our communities.
I’m not just giving you my CV here. It’s my personal experiences that have convinced me it’s time for me to turn the page. We need more ordinary, progressive people who bring real-life experience to politics, pushing for policies that improve everyday lives, not making grand empty gestures and scoring points. It's appalling that we allow poverty to persist while millionaires profit. We need to prioritise people and public services to offer a real alternative to the far right.
My experience has taught me to connect, collaborate, and build people up so I'm happy to be 2nd on the list in West Scotland, behind Ross Greer, one of our co-leaders.
I want a better future for all of us – one where people can afford a home and where everyone is valued. With your support, I believe we can get there!
What I Stand For
Tackling poverty
While working in libraries, I’ve seen how many people have relied on it as a warm space, a place to access the internet for job applications, or simply as a resource they couldn't otherwise afford. That's why I'm so passionate about fighting for policies that put people before profit. The biggest issues people are facing right now are the cost of living, poverty wages, and rip-off rents. Other political parties are prioritising the desires of the rich over the needs of the poor and blaming some of the most marginalised for the problems we’re facing in our society. I’ll make it clear we can and must choose another way, properly taxing the super-rich and ensuring that people can afford to meet basic needs like food and housing.
Transport that works for everyone
Privatisation of public services hasn’t worked, and that’s especially clear for public transport where prices are through the roof for services that are so bad we can’t rely on them. We need a public transport system that is joined up, with affordable ticketing that works across a whole journey. We need public transport that gets us where we need to go, when we need to get there. It shouldn’t take four buses to get to a hospital appointment!
Ardrossan and Arran have really had the short end of this situation, where the millionaire owners of Peel Ports have taken public money to run Ardrossan Harbour, letting it crumble into the sea, and doing nothing to make it fit for the new ferries that are currently going to have to be diverted to Troon. We can’t allow taxpayers money to go to feeding fat cats who aren’t providing the service people deserve.
Childcare we can afford
Childcare should be a public service which is affordable, accessible and useful, without gaps. Childcare needs to be there when it’s needed for children, families, and the workforce. We’re missing out on so much talent with parents having to leave work because they can’t afford childcare, or find childcare that suits their hours. And not just that, family members looking after children at home with little to no support can be isolated and can suffer mental and emotional ill health. We don’t just need childcare so parents can work, but so they can have a break too. We all know it takes a village to raise a child but we’re leaving often isolated adults alone to get on with it. It’s not fair, and it doesn’t bring out the best in anyone.
Coming together with optimism
It can be hard sometimes to believe that any politician could make positive changes, but I genuinely believe we can come together to build a better future for West Scotland. Over the coming months, I'll be out and about across West Scotland. I want to hear your ideas, your concerns, and your hopes for our region. Politics works best when we come together.
I'm also excited to work alongside the incredible activists and campaigners who are already making a difference in our communities. Whether you're involved in community ownership, food growing initiatives, transport campaigns, or any other local group, I want to learn from your experience and amplify your voice at Holyrood.
