Elect Areeq Chowdhury as Newham's first Green Mayor in 2026.
Newham is a wonderful borough yet we are plagued by rubbish flytipped on our streets, the highest crime rate in East London, and a massive housing crisis.
I am standing to be Mayor because we deserve better than this and I want to build a Newham that we can be proud of. Your contribution to this Crowdfunder could help make this happen, providing real hope and making all the difference in May.
As Mayor, I will:
The Green Party are the only credible alternative to Labour in Newham, rising in the polls under our new leader Zack Polanski.
To win though, we need your help. We are not funded by corporations or billionaires - we are funded by people like you. Your contribution will help fund a positive, hope-filled, community-led campaign and give Newham a real choice at the ballot box.
About me
I am the Green Party Councillor for Canning Town North and have lived in Newham since 2013. In my professional life, I have spent more than a decade working at the intersection of public policy, technology, and democracy. In my work, I have sat across the table and advised some of the most powerful and powerless people in the world. With experience in government, politics, civil society, and financial services, I understand how genuine, systemic, change is made.
I joined the Green Party in 2024, ending my 13 year membership of the Labour Party due to their failure to oppose the genocide in Gaza and their embrace of anti-immigration rhetoric.
We are at a turning point in politics, where values of human rights, democracy, and equality are under attack. As well as standing up for the environment, the Green Party are the only political party unashamedly standing up for these core values which I know many across our borough share.
As a Councillor, I have supported residents with issues ranging from poor housing conditions to overgrown trees, advocating on their behalf and pushing for progress on their cases. I have also spoken up for progressive changes in Council policy in several areas, including housing; parking; policing; disability; and litter. As a member of Newham Council's Audit Committee, I have scrutinised the Council's finances and urged for greater transparency and value for money.
Finally and, most importantly, I am a parent who is bringing up his young family in Newham. I want my children to grow up in a borough that is safe, clean, affordable, and full of joy and community.
Why this campaign matters
To build a Newham we can be proud of, we need fresh leadership instead of more of the same. In recent years under Labour, Newham Council has overspent it's budget by £22m; hiked taxes whilst cutting services; gone through multiple chief executives; attacked its own refuse workers for going on strike; and been awarded the worst possible rating by the independent Regulator for Social Housing.
The Green Party will make sure the Council gets the basics right, put an end to the incompetence, and ensure we have a clean, green place to live in.
This election will be a straightforward choice between continuity Labour or a better future with the Greens. Every leaflet, event, and conversation that your contribution supports will be bringing hope back to Newham and could help us succeed in May. Please make your donation count.
