Aim

We are raising money for The People's Recovery Project, any support to help us reach our target would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

Hello lovely friends!

We are running Hackney half marathon to raise money for The People’s Recovery Project.

Our lovely mum reaches a decade sober on the 11th February 2026. As adult children of an alcoholic we have lived experience of the very real impact addiction can have on yourself and the people around you. Substance misuse can often be a barrier for accessing treatment with services, and those navigating addiction face huge stigma. Contemporary research indicates those experiencing addiction may be more likely to face socioeconomic circumstances that leave them vulnerable to or, experiencing homelessness (Adult substance misuse treatment statistics 2023 to 2024: report). Alys’ lived experience of insecure housing and homelessness during our adolescence, at the height of our mum’s addiction, gave us first hand insight into the barriers accessing services when navigating homelessness. This small insight, alongside the understanding Elinor's work has given us, reiterated barriers to accessing treatment. The People’s Recovery Project aim to provide tailored specialised support for those navigating the intersection between both, which is why this cause means so much to us. "In the current paradigm we know that drug related deaths in the UK are increasing and opportunities to access recovery are extremely limited for people living on the streets. However, when people are given the opportunity to access residential detox and rehab the results can be transformative for the individual concerned."

We would be truly honoured to raise money for this incredible charity. Any donation, big or small, would make a real difference and mean the world to us. Thank you so much for your support.

More on the People’s Recovery Project:

The People’s Recovery Project is an innovative charity that seeks to make recovery achievable and sustainable for people experiencing homelessness and addiction. The project is designed to create an alternative pathway and package of support for people in this situation to access residential treatment: co-designed and co-delivered by community members with lived experience.

● In 2023 over 1400 people died while experiencing homelessness and over one third of these deaths were related to drugs and alcohol.

● Over two thirds of people who are experiencing homelessness have a drug or alcohol support need.

● In recent years there has been an annual increase in the number of people who are dying due to drug related causes in the United Kingdom

The People’s Recovery Project is inspired by real journeys made by individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction through treatment and into recovery.

These examples are currently the exception and through shared purpose our community is seeking to make recovery achievable and sustainable for people in this situation.

We are building a community that has the knowledge and understanding to support people on transformative journeys and create an environment where great people can become greater people.
