We need to raise money for our all-QTIBPOC tattoo studio so we can stay open and continue operating.
We are the team Egúngún Tattoo Studio :)
The studio has been running for 4+ years, but this year has been particularly financially difficult. Bookings have been significantly lower than usual, and the studio is currently in a position where the ability to pay rent depends on the income generated in that month; there is no safety net to fall back on, and as quieter winter months approach this is a cause of stress and concern.
Our studio is the only studio, to our knowledge, in the UK that is owned and staffed by QTIBPOC (queer, trans, intersex, black and people of colour), and that aims to provide a comfortable and relaxing experience for QTIBPOC clients, and also to non-QTIBPOC who want to get tattooed by us and support our studio.
Our space is important as QTIBPOC are underrepresented in the tattoo industry as artists, largely due to structural barriers that prevent us from starting this work to begin with, but when we can and do, accessing comfortable, respectful and affordable studios to tattoo in can be difficult. Egúngún makes an effort to nurture newer artists and provide them the space to grow in their practice.
Similarly, QTIBPOC clients may feel more comfortable to come to our studio over more mainstream spaces.
We also aim to provide an equally comfortable experience for our non-QTIBPOC clients and welcome queer and trans white people, straight BPOC and allies into our space, and appreciate the support we can get from everyone.
Besides that, our studio is really cute and we want to be able to stay there and together as a team!
Given that we’re catering to a marginalised group of people, the cost of living crisis has perhaps been more sharply felt by our clients and artists. The saturation of the tattoo market and the increasing need to be making and posting content on social media has also been challenging for many of us to keep up with as neurodivergent people.
£7,900 is the amount we would need to keep the studio open for 6 months. It would cover rent, equipment costs, licensing fees, insurance, waste collection and marketing costs.
We are asking for support to stay open. This can take different forms:
