Edinburgh Cine & Video Society

RCN SC009670, Edinburgh

Founded in 1936, the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society (ECVS) is Scotland’s oldest surviving filmmaking society and for nearly 90 years we’ve helped generations of filmmakers learn, create, and share their love of film. Help us keep the projector running for the next 90 years.

  • For over 90 years, the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society (ECVS) has been a home for filmmakers, storytellers, and cinema lovers. Founded in 1936, we are Scotland’s oldest surviving film society and one of the longest-running anywhere in the
  • From the days of 8mm film reels to the digital age, our society has nurtured generations of local filmmakers. We’ve trained beginners, inspired professionals, and kept the spirit of community cinema alive in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town.

But now, we need your help to secure our future.

Why We’re Crowdfunding

Our beloved premises complete with a small cinema, editing suite, and meeting space need urgent updates. Rising costs and essential maintenance work threaten our ability to keep the doors open.

We’re launching this crowdfunding campaign to raise £30,000 to:

• Soundproof and improve our cinema space, so we can screen films and run workshops without disturbing our neighbours.

• Upgrade our technical equipment, including sound, lighting, and projection systems, to support today’s filmmaker.

• Meet new health and safety and fire safety standards, ensuring the Society’s long-term compliance.

• Support our Filmmaking Programmes, workshops, and events which brings together members to learn, create, and share their work.

Every donation large or small helps us continue our mission: to make filmmaking accessible, affordable, and community-driven in Edinburgh.

Our Legacy

ECVS has been part of Edinburgh’s creative fabric for nearly a century.

• We’ve hosted countless screenings, workshops, and talks.

• We’ve documented community stories, cultural changes, and the evolution of Scottish film.

• We’re entirely volunteer-run powered by passion, not profit.

Your support will help preserve this living piece of cinema heritage not just as a building, but as a creative community where people of all ages come to learn and share their love of film.
