Help to create Edinburgh Art Map!
WHAT WE WANT TO DO
EDINBURGH ART MAP is a new initiative designed to strengthen the accessibility and visibility of the city’s artistic communities. Hosted by EMBASSY gallery in collaboration with Glasgow Art Map, Edinburgh Art Map will promote events and exhibitions across the city on a non-hierarchical, non-commercial basis. Through weekly event listings and social media posts, Edinburgh Art Map aims to connect artists and organisations with new audiences. The Art Map is an up-to-date and accessible platform that makes it easier to find out what’s happening in the city. This type of platform does not currently exist in Edinburgh, and this project aims to fix this! Funds raised through this crowdfunder will support the development of a new website that will host our online map and exhibitions listings, as well as the design and distribution of a printed map of Edinburgh’s permanent art spaces, created by a local designer.
WHO WE ARE
GLASGOW ART MAP is a non-profit initiative that currently supports over 40 galleries and spaces across Glasgow. Founded by the staff of David Dale Gallery in 2018, our aim is to break down barriers to engagement, help people discover art in their city, and ensure that cultural opportunities are open to everyone. By placing grassroots activity alongside established organisations, we promote an inclusive picture of the city’s cultural life, and enable communities to encounter art across diverse contexts, while also providing recognition for those outside the mainstream. This both widens access for audiences and increases visibility for artists and projects that often lack resources to reach the public. For many audiences, we provide their first point of entry into contemporary art, creating pathways for participation, dialogue, and exchange, between audiences, artists and galleries.
Currently, we achieve our core objectives through:
EMBASSY is an artist-led organisation based in Edinburgh that seeks to support early career artists through the facilitation of exhibitions, commissioning opportunities and events. EMBASSY was established in 2003 and since then has been run by a rolling non-hierarchical committee, with a legacy of DIY and collective organising. EMBASSY will act as the host for Edinburgh Art Map, providing essential administrative support and connecting EAM with people, spaces and organisations across the city.
WHAT WE NEED
The Art Map is affordable to run on a day-to-day basis, and our twice-yearly printed editions are supported through ongoing partnerships with galleries and local businesses. Once the project is off the ground, it will be self-sustaining, but we need an initial injection of funds to commission the design of a logo and the printed map, to build a new website, and to cover extra staff hours and marketing costs. This is a community-based initiative, created by and for the people of Edinburgh. We need your support to make Edinburgh Art Map a reality!
To be as transparent as possible, we have provided a breakdown of our proposed costs below:
Staff fee (to cover extra administration during setup phase): £1,398.80 (2 staff members for 4hrs p/w for 13 weeks, based on real living wage)
Website design and build: £1,275 (based on quote from our website designer)
Logo design: £594.00 (2-day fee at SAU 3+ year rate)
Paper map design: £2,032.80 (7-day fee at SAU 3+ year rate)
Paper map printing: £925.00
Advertising and marketing materials: £310.00
Overhead costs: £37.50
Contingency at 5%: £328.57
