Aim

The Eco Essex costs such as website and Information Commissioners Office need to be covered each year. Otherwise we can't do what we do.

Eco Essex started in October 2018 when XR and Greta were just coming on the scene. There was a lot of hype at the time and as two mums from SE Essex, we wanted a place to discuss how to live a more eco friendly life and how to bring up our kids' to have a more sustainable outlook. Between us we had 2 toddlers, twin newborns and a hospitalised pregnancy at the time but for some reason we thought it was a good time to start moderating a facebook group. And that is how our first Eco Essex facebook group started.

Then after a short period of time we realised that one of the problems with modern lifestyles was consumerism and that if we started a sister facebook group encouraging people to rehome their 'junk' to be upcycled, repaired or reused, then we can save loads from landfill! So that is how group number 2 started, the 'Eco Essex Rehome Reuse Repurpose' facebook group!

We also saw lots more potential for what we could achieve so over the years have run free workshops in our temporary, pre-covid venue. Many of our volunteers were also involved in a charity project going into schools to run sustainable period workshops. We co-admin an facebook group dedicated to those in education called 'Eco Education' where we have provided workshops to PTA's to discuss how to have more eco-friendly school events.

We've done various things to try and raise the profile of living a more eco friendly lifestyle with radio and tv appearances, stalls / events, tonnes of social media posts and much much more.

But with most things, there are often hidden costs. We have costs of maintaining our website each year, our ICO licence for data handling and occasionally PR materials.

We are also having other ideas but most ideas have some costs. For example one idea to optimise the public toilet menstrual baskets by putting in reusable items for people to see and choose from. Raising awareness on an issue which is important to supporting menstruating people's bank accounts, health and carbon footprint! So any extra money could go towards exciting new projects in the near future.

Between our volunteers, they probably spend 3-4 hours a day moderating facebook groups, meetings (with councils, the constitution etc), social media posts, website developments etc.

All we ask is that anyone who has benefitted from Eco Essex to donate £1 (you are welcome to donate more of course, but we are only asking for £1 each as we know times are hard).
