Who we are
Drumchapel Foodbank has been operating for over 10 years. We are supported by Kingsridge Cleddans Economic Development Group to help people in the North West of Glasgow in immediate food poverty. People come to us because they have benefit problems, have lost their jobs or had a crisis such as illness, bereavement, divorce or a domestic emergency. The cost of living crisis and the loss of the winter fuel payment have hit people hard and the demand for our service is rising.
What we do
Last year we handed out over 14,000 food parcels and helped over 5000 households across North West Glasgow, including older people, families and disabled people.
We provide parcels including food and other household essentials, including baby supplies and pet food (where needed). If people can’t get to our office in Drumchapel due to age, disability or other barriers we can home deliver parcels.
More than a food bank
We are more than a food bank. We take time to talk to people about their problems. Using our strong local connections and partners we can help people with a range of issues they may face including debt advice, mental health support and more. Unlike many food banks we don’t have a voucher system. Instead we continue to support people until they can manage without us. People often tell that they wouldn’t have known what to do or where to go without our help.
Holiday services
Holiday periods are particularly difficult for people who need our services. Older and disabled people who live alone are often isolated and lonely. This winter they may need to decide between heating or eating. Families have extra meals to provide when schools are closed and pressure on budgets for activities.
Every year we provide additional support to ensure that our customers can have a good festive season with less anxiety and stress. This includes ingredients for festive meals and some small gifts of toiletries for adults and gift vouchers for children.
During other holidays we provide extra supplies to help families with children avoid holiday hunger. We include fresh fruit and vegetables, milk and bread in these family packs.
Can you help us?
We rely on volunteers to run the service and the generosity of individuals, organisations and businesses to give food and financial donations. We particularly need funds for our holiday services to provide the extra help that people need. Please help us to support people in crisis.
