Fat Fluffs is a rabbit rescue and sanctuary based in Hampton in Arden in the West Midlands. We take in all sorts of rabbits and as far as possible we find them loving forever homes. For those with more challenging personalities or continuing health problems we provide sanctuary for them here and they stay as part of the family.
We are a team of three trustees, four
employees and around 45 volunteers and have been based at our current location for 10years now. We have worked hard to provide a high welfare environment for our rescued animals and have prided ourselves in going the extra mile to ensure they receive the best care and life while they are with us.
In the last few years we have been drastically impacted by the high speed rail work that is going on in our local area with the biggest issue being that, where mounds of earth have been put up right at the bottom of our garden, drainage is now almost completely non existent, not only for the Fluffs' garden but for the entire length of the center, affecting the rescue rabbits accommodation as well.
The permanent Fluffs have their own garden, as seen in our video, but this is now getting waterlogged every time it rains, meaning the rabbits are unable to use the garden to run, play, dig and do their bunny thing. This last winter we even had to bail out the path making access difficult for staff, visitors and volunteers.
Not only is our sanctuary buns accommodation being damaged due to the amount of standing water collecting instead of, as previously, running away to the lower fields but so are the rescue rabbit's pens down the lower end of the site. We are now looking at having to repair and replace many of these due to rot. At times we have even had to move the rabbits out of their accommodation due to low level flooding.
Our vision is to see the center's ground restored to it's former glory but, to do this, we need to have extensive drainage works done throughout the site and this level of work is outside the scope of our volunteers expertise. We have been advised to create a drainage soak away system around the boarder of the Fluffs garden and, due to the clay depth, we will need this to connect into an attenuation tank to allow for the volume of water collecting. Once this is laid we will relay the patio, top soil and turf allowing the garden to stay dry on the surface.
We also need to create a gulley soak away down the full length of the site, both sides behind the bunny barns, to create a natural channel for the water collecting around the rabbit pens to disperse. Due to water damage the fencing around the rescue also needs replacing.
All the money raised through this fund raiser will be used to rectify the water logging on the rescue site, repair the damage done and future proof our rescue. This will not only benefit the rabbits, both those already with us and those yet to come in, but our staff and volunteers as well. So many people give their time to support what we do, progress their careers, build friendships, find peace being with the animals and we want to ensure we give them the best environment in return.
