We built a positive community space after Covid-19 turned our lives upside down, now we need your help!

We're still collecting donations

On the 19th January 2021 we'd raised £3,446 with 89 supporters in 21 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

 New stretch target

Any extra funding we receive will go towards creating a line up of creative events throughout the year, support for a local substance abuse and rough sleeping initiative, as well as improvements to the shop.

What is the Well?

Like many, our worlds were turned upside down overnight when the pandemic hit. Our careers were all halted indefinitely and we became unemployed without warning. We found temporary work to survive initially until we stumbled across an old deteriorating unloved off license called Hartleys.

We’ve brought together our love of nature, design and ceremony, to create a vibrant new community space in the heart of Kemptown Village, Brighton.

Where are we?

Positioned along the most wonderful row of independent shops in Brighton, we knew it deserved better, and after three weeks of thought and our imaginations running wild, we had the keys to the premises.

What's it all about?

We spent a month solid stripping back the unit to its bare bones. All the while chatting to confused passers by who thought we were crazy for embarking on such a project during an unprecedented time. We spoke to locals, authorities, rough sleepers and friends, spreading the word that we were creating something positive during a time when our community needed it most.

Why we need your help

On the first of August, having run out of money, we rolled up the shutter to an unfinished bottle shop. A display of warm beers, wine and one under counter fridge meant we relied heavily on the support of the community, which we received in abundance.

Five months, four fridges, four taps and a new toilet later and The Well has already created so many beautiful memories that we will never forget. However, with no government support available, furloughing staff not an option due to illogical regulations, being a new business and bureaucracy, The Well is in danger of running dry. In order for us to be sure that we will be open to the public in Spring, we need your support now more than ever. We have put our heart and soul into this space, and it has meant everything to us to receive the feedback and love you’ve shown us. This year has taught us that without community, there is nothing.

Having been privileged enough to work and having always grafted and for everything we have achieved in life, we are not asking for handouts, instead just pledges for pints and limited edition David Shrigley merchandise for when The Well is once again open in the future.

All we ask is that you buy a couple of pints, glasses of wine and stick them in the bin or down the well for when we get to see you again. Simple.

If you want to pledge more to ensure our survival, we have limited edition David Shrigley print t-shirts to give away for those that are able to do so.

Thank you for your support!
