Aim

Help save Generate, a vital project which supports local people with dementia and their carers through a free programme of arts activities

Having first launched in 2015, Generate is a free inclusive arts programme designed to support people with dementia and their carers and has supported a large number of participants and carers over the past eight years.

The programme delivers weekly visual arts workshops at Aspex, and encourages participants to follow their own creative interests and find the techniques, materials and subject matter that inspires them in a comfortable, supportive art space.

Generate offers a vital lifeline for the local community, and as one of the only projects of its kind in Portsmouth, we now need your support to raise £10,000 to save the project and continue this important work.

Why we need your support?

Over the past eight years, the Generate project has been supported by charitable trusts and foundations. As this funding comes to an end, we now need your generous support to ensure we can continue the legacy of this important community project.

We need to raise a total of £10,000 to continue delivering the Generate project. The money raised will be used to support the general running costs of the project and will create further opportunities for participants to explore their creative potential and build crucial support networks through group trips, developmental activities, and more.

A supportive space for carers and families

Alongside the creative workshops, Aspex also supports a self-run carers support group, which provides a much needed respite and an opportunity for carers to talk and share with others who empathise with and understand their situation.

Over the years of running the carers support group, it has become a lifeline to many of those involved, and many carers still attend even if their loved one can no longer attend or has passed away.

About Aspex

Aspex brings new art and ideas to the heart of Portsmouth. Our mission is to cultivate art, creativity and a collaborative community. We believe art makes our lives better, brings joy, broadens minds, facilitates learning and creates meaningful connections in our communities.

We create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience contemporary visual art – from looking and discussing, to making and curating. We achieve this by delivering an exciting and varied programme of exhibitions, off-site projects and participation events.

For over 40 years, we have supported sensational artists at the early stages of their careers. Artists such as Mona Hatoum, Richard Wilson and Susan Collis, all now internationally-acclaimed, received support from Aspex. Today, we continue to offer the next generation of contemporary visual artists a platform from which to launch their careers.

FAQ'S

What will happen if you don’t receive the full amount?

If we don’t reach our target, we will use the total raised funds to support the ongoing delivery of the Generate project, and will look to other ways of funding to ensure the project doesn't have to come to an end.

This is why we desperately need your help by making a pledge and sharing the campaign with all of your family and friends. This is your chance to make a difference to the future and wellbeing of the local community. Please help us to spread the word so that we reach our target and are able to continue this vital project.

Isn’t Aspex supported by Arts Council England and Portsmouth City Council?

Aspex is a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) of Arts Council England and receives ongoing support from Portsmouth City Council to support our core staff and operational costs.

For every exhibition, event or educational activity we fundraise, sourcing financial support in order to employ Workshop Leaders, purchase materials and more.

When will I receive my reward?

All rewards will be sent out following the Crowdfunder’s completion (Sunday 9 July). All general rewards will be sent out via Royal Mail (Second Class). The Generated In Lockdown recipe book is subject to printing time. Please see the product descriptions for all other delivery specifications. A member of the Aspex team will be in touch once the crowdfunder ends to confirm details.

Will you ask people for money again after this campaign?

Yes, Aspex is a charity and we need to fundraise year-round for all of our work. We rely on earned income from hires of the spaces in our building and sales in our shop, and we regularly apply to Trusts and Foundations and other public funding to support our projects.

We gratefully receive donations from generous supporters, including our Patrons, and we regularly work in partnership with sponsors and partners to make money go further. If you would like to talk to us about getting involved with Aspex as a Patron or sponsor please contact our Director Joanne Bushnell, [email protected]
