We are fundraising to cover production costs of a new album by Donald WG Lindsay and Alasdair Roberts, their first album together as a duo.
Donald WG Lindsay and Alasdair Roberts
Scottish musicians Donald WG Lindsay and Alasdair Roberts have been friends for around thirty years, first meeting as teenagers. During that time they've made a lot of music together - around various kitchen tables, in various bars and pubs and occasionally on stage and in the recording studio. It's only now, however, that the time has come for them to release their first duo album!
New album: Welcome Home My Dearie
Recorded to tape in the analogue splendour of Green Door Studios, Glasgow by Sam Smith, the album will be entitled Welcome Home My Dearie, after a lowland pipe tune which features on it. Donald plays Scottish smallpipes featuring his signature Lindsay System chanter, as well as twelve-string guitar and whistle; Alasdair plays six-string acoustic guitar; and the two of them sing, together or apart. The album's ten tracks span from longer Scots narrative ballads to shorter lyrical songs both traditional and original, by way of a set of whistle tunes and a couple of sets of pipe tunes with guitar accompaniment. Recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, the album captures the raw energy and variety of the duo's live concerts.
What exactly is being funded?
Recording, mixing and mastering were self-funded and have all been completed; now Alasdair and Donald are seeking to raise funds to cover production and manufacturing costs. Welcome Home My Dearie will be produced on CD to the highest specifications by esteemed Scottish production company Birnam CD, Ltd. Any additional funding raised over the target will go towards album promotion costs and touring expenses on our album launch tour of Scotland and England in October/November 2025.

"Alasdair and Donald are masters of their art. Alasdair sang in a keening, often mournful tenor, playing six-string guitar with impressive dexterity and precision reminiscent sometimes of Dick Gaughan, who graced the same stage a few years ago. Donald switched between his smallpipes and 12-string guitar and sang in a darker baritone. The two guitars together producing a remarkable shimmer of notes, reminiscent of a clarsach. When the pipes joined the guitar, the ringing notes of the six-string – often capoed high up the fretboard for a lute-like tone – stood out beautifully against the warm, woody drones and gracenoted melody of the pipes. Not only the lyrics, then, but the performance too, took us back to earlier times. I found it easy to imagine music very like this being played in Tankerness or Skaill House, or even the palaces of the Stewart earls."
