The Problem
There is a wellness crisis in Britain's dogs. One in two dogs are diagnosed with a cancer by the age of 10, one in three dogs suffer from osteoarthritis, eight out of 10 dogs suffer renal failure, and third of dogs have skin conditions. 80% of the immune system resides in the large intestine which is home to the gut microbiome. All disease begins with inflamation and if the immune system doesnt work properly then this results in the onset of a disease. Initial research on dogs’ biomes is bleak, revealing them to have a lack of benficial bacteria. We need to fix the problem now.
Our Solution
Boil and Broth have teamed up with Anna Webb (nationally recognised Canine Nutritionist expert) and PHD Microbiologist, Dr Carol Hughes (Biome4Pets) and Aberystwyth University to run the worlds first ever Biome Broth study for dogs. As a research project we predict it wll expose this wellness crisis and reveal the impact of modern lifestyle choices and how bone broth supports canine gut health in a unique and unparrelled way. We’re presenting the microbiome’s relationship to overall wellness in dogs by revealing a picture of dogs’ health from the inside out!
Our Proof
Dr Carol Hughes explains: “Since 2014 we have been researching the microbiome of dogs and have the largest metagenomic sequencing database. We have recorded and profiled the changes to the microbial populations of thousands of dogs throughout the decade and have taken part in many trials of pro/pre/symbiotics. The most impressive results and changes to the microbiome have come from the use of the simple bone broth, which is why we have joined this study. Bone broth increases diversity scores, reduces bad bacteria, and increases the bacteria that support gut wall health”.
How The Funds Will Be Spent
In May 2024, we launched the Biome Broth Study. We have now tested the faecal matter of 28 x dogs before 4 weeks of bone broth, and then after the dogs have had broth for 4 weeks in their diet. Testing the faecal matter observes the balance of bacteria in the dogs. The results are revealing that bone broth is bringing balance to the canine gut bacteria by reducing harmful bacteria and increasing beneficial bacteria.
The funds raised will be spent on raising awareness to educate UK dog owners about the study and how introducing broth to their dog's diet could help their wellness long term. We plan to raise this awareness through TV, radio, social media, webinars, print publications, emails, blogs and influencers.
Our Team
Dr Carol Hughes (PHD Microbiologist)
Microbiome researcher since 2014, worked on major projects linking the microbiome to obesity and gastric inflammation in dogs and horses. Other major projects include the development of a mobile biosensor (dogs and horses) to detect dysbiosis with Professor Chris Gwenin (Bangor University).
Anna Webb (Canine Nutritionist)
Anna is passionate about natural healthcare and believes you are what you eat! Studying nutrition for dogs and cats at The College of Integrated Veterinary Studies, Anna offers a holistic view fusing training and behaviour, environmental factors with natural nutrition for optimum health, especially for the Microbiome.
Anna is co-host of the only weekly radio ‘slot’ dedicated to dogs in Europe -airing nationally on BBC Local’s ‘Barking at the Moon’.
Rachel Down (Founder and MD Boil and Broth Ltd)
Rachel started Boil and Broth back in 2018 after she found the bone broth and kefir water helped to reverse Candida overgrowth and Leaky Gut Syndrome. Rachel lost 2 ½ stone in 12 weeks and 6 stone in two years. Naturally, she went into business wanting to help others. Rachel also started studying a BSc Health Science degree at the Open University. She was keen to understand more about gut health and also the products she was making. Rachel developed all of the products on her science knowledge and since then the products have been innovated with health science always in mind.
