Hi, We're Work In Progress Theatre
Work In Progress is a dynamic and vibrant theatre company fuelled by creatives who are passionate about sharing important messages. We aim to create musical theatre which excites, interests and challenges our audience, inspiring them to take action on global issues. We're currently developing several new musicals, and we have been fortunate enough to be able share these around the UK over recent months, including at The Theatre Cafe on London's West End.
Our latest production, Dinner With Gatsby is a brand new musical set at a dinner party for Nick Carraway's birthday, which retells the classic novel The Great Gatsby from a new perspective, focussing on the struggles felt by those assigned female at birth and those identifying as LGBTQ+. This is your invite to Gatsby's...will you join us.
About Dinner With Gatsby
Dinner With Gatsby is a brand new musical theatre production based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel ‘The Great Gatsby’, performed by a cast of 8 with a live jazz band accompaniment. This is a musical where we see the events from the book unfold at a dinner party for Nick’s birthday. The production explores this well-known story from a new perspective, as we highlight Fitzgerald's queer subtones surrounding the characters of Jordan Baker and Nick Carraway, and add further insight into Tom and Daisy's relationship, with a lens on domestic violence.
Our plans for this show
We're crowdfunding for the research and development period of this show and the staging of our first performance. The show is currently being written and will be completed in August. In September we will begin our a 4 month workshop period to help the show reach it's full potential, and then will then begin rehearsals in January for the finished version of the show. This will be performed in Bangor, North Wales in February 2023.
Phase 2 of this show consists of a UK tour in summer 2023. This will be separately funded and will see us take this show to around 10 venues all across the UK, sharing the important messages and themes that are within it.
Rewards
However much you're able to pledge, you’ll have access to a wide variety of rewards in exchange for your support, including signed programmes and posters, free tickets, Q&As with the cast, and exclusive access to workshops, dress rehearsals, and more; plus our endless gratitude. You can find the full list of rewards on this page; there's something for every donation starting from just £5. This is your chance to get hands-on with this production and to join the Work In Progress community.
We can also arrange specific packages if you or someone you know runs a business and would like to sponsor this production. If this is the case, let's chat at the details below!
What your support will fund
Your support will cover 3 different aspects of this show; production costs, venue costs, and paying a fair wage. Production and venue hire costs include hiring a location to stage the show in, building set, creating costumes, finding props, and more; these are fixed costs. We will always ensure that we are paying the cast, band, and creative team a fair, equity rate (£100/day, ~£12.50/hr). The funds raised dictate how many days of workshops and rehearsals we are able to undertake, not how much each person is paid per day.
Supporting this production
Your support is invaluable as we work to produce this show. If you’d like to find out more, please visit our website and we’d be happy to answer any questions. If you’d like to donate we’d be very thankful for your support. Visit our socials for more updates and feel free to say hi or sign up to our newsletter.
We are aware, however, that this is still a challenging time for everyone, especially creatives and freelancers within the arts. If you are unable to give please do consider supporting us by sharing this page with anyone you can or spreading the word via social media.
Thanks
