Aim: DIADROMES (meaning “routes” in Greek) is a poetic documentary on the significance of community in modern-day Athens.
For those who are curious, DIADROMES (meaning “routes” in Greek) is a documentary that provides insight into what local life can be like in a foreign space like Athens, that is so often portrayed through extremes in the media; nothing is ever as ideal or catastrophic as it seems. It is a chance to see how many more similarities we share than differences as people and a reminder to appreciate those who are there for us on a daily basis within our own lives.
In this story, we follow a professor called Nikos, a passionate and charismatic individual, who knows very well the joys and struggles of living in this city. Through the various routes he takes along Athens, we come into contact with some very vibrant people; the students that he teaches, old friends, close family members, the meaningful aspects of his everyday life. That is where we experience the strong bonds Nikos has built over time with those around him and discover a deep kind of richness and value that exists in the city that is unshaken by economic instability. DIADROMES is ultimately a story about the significance of community and human connection, how the closeness of people’s interactions in Athens is what ultimately forms the courage that is needed to face hardship and continue to move forward.
DIADROMES is not meant as a didactic story but rather a poetic immersion into the atmosphere and psychology of a space, that works as a collage of movement, creative sound design, colour, textures and interactions within the context of Nikos’ life. Through his story, we gain an unexpected perspective of a city that is unlike what we normally get to see and discover the warmth and solidarity that exist all around, despite challenging circumstances.
If you want to dive deeper into the atmosphere we aim to create, our sound designer has put together a soundscape which you can listen to on Soundcloud in the link here.
A sample of Lauren Faulkner's (D.O.P) mood-board:
Highly inspired by street photographers both in style and approach, Lauren, the cinematographer, will be trying to bring out the variety of tones in Athens and capture people at their most natural. Greek street photographers, such as Constantine Manos, are her source of inspiration.
Having been inspired by her previous filmmaking experience, Ioanna has decided to direct her second documentary project, this time in the city of Athens where she was born. She believes that documentary filmmaking has something special to offer. It is an opportunity to reshape the narratives we tell ourselves about life by making a choice on what is significant, be it a global matter or the tiniest of details. Through filmmaking she is made to reassess her understanding and perception of the world, in the attempt to create something honest and meaningful, and in doing so hopefully inspire others to challenge their views as well and search for the things that really matter in life.
Born and raised in Bulgaria, Mihaela has been looking for a way to put together all of her creative passions in one place. Starting out in theatre acting, she soon realised that she wanted to expand her horizons in storytelling and so her journey began as an artist and filmmaker in Bournemouth Film School. Three years later, she is now graduating with a specialism in Producing and Documentary. As a filmmaker, Mihaela is interested in creating meaningful films that explore human nature. She believes in humanity and wants to show, in authentic ways, what we tend to forget - the solidarity, the tenderness, the generosity, and unity we are capable of. Hoping that the film will touch the rusty strings of our souls, she is passionate about making the project of DIADROMES a reality and distributing it to festivals to share this experience with as many people as possible.
Photography has been an infatuation for Lauren since teenagehood, but it particularly kicked off when she was handed her grandfather’s old Minolta before a short trip to Amsterdam. From there, Lauren gained a fascination with street photography and its ability to transform what some may see as mundanity, into art, and adapted this to short documentary filmmaking. Using their visual eye and applying careful research into poetic documentary cinema, Lauren aims to bring the beauty and, at times, strife of Athens to the screen.
Sound has always had a very important role in Rebeka's life. Already from an early age, she started to learn how to play guitar and piano as well as actively going to music concerts and art exhibitions that displayed audiovisual art. Rebeka has worked as a sound designer on multiple productions in the Bournemouth Film School as well as other projects. With great passion for sound design and massive attention to detail, Rebeka hopes to create a soundscape for Diadromes that will enrich the audience's experience.
Chris has had a keen interest in filmmaking during the early years of his school life and has been working on a variety of films ever since ranging from fictional, documentary and experimental based shorts. With a clear passion for editing Chris has worked on multiple short films both within the Bournemouth Film School and in independent productions. Through these previous productions, Chris has formed a collection of technical and creative editing techniques which will be used to help shape Diadromés into the film that the crew are striving to create.
As an international production, our biggest expense is transportation. We need your help to make sure we travel safely, don’t starve and have everything basic we need to live there for 10 days to be able to shoot the best film we can! We have prepared some, in our modest opinion, interesting rewards from which you can choose.
If you're still interested in our project but can't invest in it now, it would be just as helpful to share it with your friends and family!
