Devon Torry of Newtown Football Club - ACL Injury

Aim

A serious injury has sidelined Devon Torry. With our community’s support, he can get the surgery he needs to return to football.

Devon Torry currently plays for the First Team Mens Newtown Football Club.  He has recently suffered a ruptured ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) — a key ligament inside the knee that keeps it stable during running, turning, and sudden stops.  

The ACL in Devon’s knee needs surgery, and our community is pulling together to support him and we asking for any donation however big or small, so we can get him back on the pitch doing what he does best!

A message form one of his closest friends and team mates - 

As a teammate, I can say Devon is a player of outstanding quality. Up top, he’s a constant threat — his pace kills defenders, and he gives us a massive outlet when we need a break. But what makes him truly special is who he is off the pitch: a good friend, a top guy, caring, kind, supportive, always trying his best to help people. We’re all behind him. 

Devon knows that surgery will be only the beginning. He is prepared for the hard work and lengthy rehabilitation ahead. We are trying to give him the opportunity to return to the Newtown set-up, continue the career he has worked towards since childhood and discover how far his ability and determination can take him. 

A bit about Devon - 

Devon began playing football for SAHA Jets when he was six years old. It quickly became apparent that he was a natural forward. He was one of the quickest players in the league, a strong and direct winger with a powerful strike—qualities that remain central to his game today.

An important stage in his development came at Orlando Pirates in Johannesburg, where he played a key role in their under-13 side. The standard of coaching and the distinctive style of football he experienced there gave him qualities and advantages that remained with him during his later time at Shrewsbury Town and throughout his long association with Newtown AFC.

Devon joined Newtown’s under-19 side as a teenager and progressed to become the league’s leading goal scorer. In the 2023–24 season, he won the Cymru Premier Development League North Golden Boot after scoring 36 goals in 24 matches and was named the Newtown under-19 Players’ Player of the Year.  He was the also Captain during that season, and was asked to come on for the first team during several matches.  He also progressed into the senior side and has become a well-established and popular member of the first-team dressing room, despite still being only 21.

During a loan spell with Aberystwyth Town, Devon helped create a moment of club history. In November 2024, he stepped forward to score the winning penalty in their Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final shoot-out against Cardiff City, securing Aberystwyth’s first appearance in the competition’s final.

Newtown has experienced a challenging period recently, but Devon has remained loyal to the club and committed to its cause. Football has been at the centre of his life since childhood, and Newtown means an enormous amount to him. He has been deeply touched by the support already shown by people at the club and across the wider local football community.
