Aim

To scale up research, more pond space is required. Help Project Seagrass take seagrass restoration in the UK to the next level.

Seagrass provides a habitat for thousands of species across the globe and boosts biodiversity, however, it is under threat. We have lost up to 92% in the UK and are currently in a climate and biodiversity crisis. By researching and understanding how seagrass thrives we can bring life back to our seas and reverse this trend.

To take seagrass restoration to the next level in the UK, we need to have proof of concept and, with your support, we can do this at the Project Seagrass nursery. We are trialling a range of methods, conditions and treatments that aim to improve seagrass germination and long term survival within a controlled environment. Taking these methods into outdoor ponds will test if these concepts will work when exposed to the elements.

Into the great outdoors...

The aim for these outdoor ponds is to expand upon the current trials, test transplant planting and seed planting methods. But to do this successfully we need to repair the outdoor ponds so they are watertight and ready to be filled and planted.

There are a range of items we will need to purchase to make this project a reality, such as spillways to improve water movement to mimic a natural environment. Tools and equipment will also need to be purchased and additional such as sealer, waders, gloves and high vis jackets for volunteers to support the work.
