Dear Supporter,

As Europe Day, 9 May, approaches, I wanted to write to you to let you know about an exciting project that New Europeans is taking part in that day.

"Citizens Take Over Europe" is a one day online event which brings together civil rights organisations from across Europe in a festival to celebrate the values we share in Europe - freedom, equality and solidarity, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Europe is a much broader space than just the European Union and within that space, we, as citizens need to take responsibility for making sure that our rights and freedoms are defended.

The lesson of #DeniedMyVote is that we need to be ever vigilant.

Just look at how the governments in Poland and Hungary for example are taking advantage of the coronavirus crisis to snatch power from citizens.

When the first phase of the immediate health crisis is over, and the economic consequences become clearer, who will speak up for our democracy?

In particular, who will stand up for the democratic rights of all citizens, those who are in the weakest position, the most marginalised?

And yet these are exactly the voices that need to be listened to most attentively in the crisis.

New Europeans continues to work in the UK and in the EU to defend our civil rights as citizens.

We are leaving this crowdfunder open as we are neither going to let the #DeniedMyVote scandal go nor stat quiet the next time the government comes to snatch away chunks of our democracy.
