Thank you for all you have done to support the #DeniedMyVote campaign through your contribution to the campaign appeal and in other ways. It is very much appreciated.

I am pleased  to let you know that the Electoral Commission has just published a report into the 2019 European parliament elections which vindicates the central assertions of our campaign.

UK Government under fire from Electoral Commission over democracy failings

The report makes clear that up to 1.7m EU citizens were not allowed to vote in the European elections even though they were on the electoral register.  Many Britons abroad were denied the vote due to the late arrival of postal votes. 

All of this happened as a result of a failure by the government to adequately prepare for the elections despite prior warnings. Commitments to correct flaws in the administrative procedures for the elections which had led to the same problems occurring and on a similar scale in 2014 were not fulfilled. 

This led to a systematic and in our view deliberate failure to adequately prepare for the EU elections as required by law.

Tomorrow, Else Kvist, will speak on behalf of New Europeans about the #DeniedMyVote campaign and the #Rally4OurRights in London.

Else was denied her vote in the European elections in London and will speak about her experience and how we are working together with MPs such as Lyn Brown MP, Joanna Cherry QC MP and many others to secure a public inquiry.

It is vital that we can continue to campaign for an inquiry into #DeniedMyVote and for a full investigation by the European Commission and the European Parliament as well as by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.

We have achieved an important breakthrough with the publication of the Electoral Commission report and with your support we will be able to build on this success.

A further aspect of our campaign relates to the rights of EU citizens to vote in local elections. 

We are contacting all political parties to make sure that they have a commitment in their election manifestos to maintaining the current voting rights of EU citizens if Brexit goes ahead. 

We also want to see the abolition of the 15 year rule for UK citizens abroad.

It is shameful that in 2019, we do not seem to live in a democracy in which people are treated fairly and in which everyone's participation is welcome.

With our campaign and with your backing we aim to contribute to putting that right.
