Our democracy is under attack.

There are those who would like to see us go backwards: make it harder to vote, make it easier for billionaires to bankroll politicians, and entrench a broken voting system that delivers only fragmentation and chaos.

The voices are only getting stronger and louder. 

All over the world, the balance is tipping in favour of leaders who are anti-democracy. President Trump has forced American democracy into freefall. The far right in France is closer than ever to power. In the UK, our political parties are hooked on big donations from billionaires. 

What happens next will decide the future of our democracy for generations to come. 

Do we succumb to democratic backsliding and go the way of Trump’s America? Or do we seize this moment  with both hands, and start to build a better, bolder democracy that works for everyone?

We can’t carry on like this. And yet our leaders have been sitting on their hands for years now, refusing to act.

Trust in our politics is in free fall. In the last year, we’ve seen masked men dressed in black blockading ports, foreign billionaires whipping up division for their own gain, and a concerted attack on our human rights from all fronts.

Our First Past the Post voting system continues to deliver distorted and fragmented results, leaving us with a government elected on just a third of the national vote, and boosting the vote share of the Far Right.

A few mega-donors are pouring millions into our politics, and some of our MPs are raking in hundreds and thousands from other jobs. This kind of thing stinks of cronyism, and tarnishes the name of all our politicians. 

Meanwhile our rights remain unprotected. Politicians are queuing up to undermine the institutions that protect us. 

And while our democracy is on fire, government after government has sat and watched it burn.

This time must be different. 

There is another possibility. We see a brighter future for our politics. A fair voting system where every vote counts, no place for big money or cronyism, and a seat at the table for every citizen.

Enemies of democracy will try to exploit this crisis to hoard power for themselves. Our job is to stop them by offering something better. This is how:

• Bring in a political donation cap. This would level the playing field, and stop a few billionaires from buying the kind of influence the rest of us can only dream of.
• Change our voting system. Our current system is causing chaos in this era of multi-party politics. It is amplifying the influence of the authoritarian right. 
• Give our elections watchdog some teeth. The Electoral Commission is under-resourced and lacks the power to really uphold election law. 

These are 3 big fights. If we win them, we win the soul of our democracy for another generation.

The Prime Minister and the Democracy Minister are both open supporters of fair votes, getting big money out of politics, and protecting our rights. Both have said many encouraging things about their willingness to act.

But words are not enough - we need to see action, and soon. 

The authoritarian right are wasting no time mounting their attacks on democracy. We need to get on the front foot now, before it’s too late.
