The Sex Fest : Decolonising Contraception

by Decolonising Contraception in London, England, United Kingdom

We did it
On 24th July 2019 we successfully raised £3,036 with 105 supporters in 70 days

To create a one day festival which provides a fun space for people of colour to discuss their sexual, reproductive health and well-being.

Ever wanted to learn about sexual pleasure, genital anatomy, contraception, STIs, psychosexual health, the art of masturbation and lots more all in one place? Ever wanted a safe space for people of colour to discuss the wonderful world of sex and sexuality? Well it has arrived! Decolonising Contraception presents the Sex Festival for people of colour.

For both the sexually savvy and those that are just getting started - it’s time to expand your sexual understanding.

Decolonising Contraception (DC) is a not for profit, community interest group formed by people of colour working within sexual and reproductive health who are devoted to improving the outcomes for marginalised groups. We have already hosted a series of wonderful talks at several universities, lots of fun workshops along side other charities and at other festivals.

DC aims to promote discussion on how culture and history impacts on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) particularly amongst previously colonised populations. We believe that better cultural and historical awareness can help health professionals and users accessing sexual and reproductive health services.

Currently in the UK, people of colour experience huge health disparities within sexual and reproductive health such as:

- Asian women being twice as likely to die in pregnancy than their white counterparts

- Black women being five times as likely to die in pregnancy than their white counterparts

- people of colour being at increased risk of STIs and HIV & then being more likely to receive a late diagnosis.

- queer people of colour face additional barriers like stigma & discrimination when accesing sexual & reproductive health services

You spoke at our panels & workshops, we have listened and now we are keen to have all the best sex educators, activists and professionals answering all your important questions all in one place. We really believe that YOU deserve to be listened to. We want to put on a high quality event & support our communities.

We will create a one day festival collaborating with people of colour spanning different sectors from  sex educators, creatives, academics and clinicians to deliver a fun event on everything sexual & reproductive health.

Think exciting performances, workshops, panels, stalls, stands with the questions you came with being answered too!

We will have a range of different workshops & panels aimed at specific demographics.

Your funding will help secure a great venue, pay workshop facilitators and create a successful event. If all goes to plan then we hope to host the first Decolonising Contraception: Sex Fest in February 2020 in London!

Please give what you can. We hope that we will be able to make this a low cost event available to everyone particularly the most vulnerable.

'A day for people of colour to talk about sex and relationships and health and well-being is important because we need it.' Saaqib Afzal - Community & Youth Worker, Activist

'With this festival we’d have an unique opportunity to address sexual health issues in a way that’s never been addressed before and get new people into the room that have not been given the opportunity to talk about sexual health on their own terms with people who can give them the medical advice and signposting to services that they would need, both in London and around the UK.' Josina Calliste- Strategic Lead for Women & PrEP at PrEPster

'I feel like this is an incredible idea and it must must must must be done. I think that we don’t have enough conversations about people of colour, queer people of colour when it comes to sexual health and this would be incredible.' - Phil Samba - Social Activist, Writer

'I really really really want you to give all of your money to Sex Fest because it is so important that we take care of our bodies and of our minds and each other so this is possibly the best thing that you can give your funds to, please donate generously.' - Sophie Duker - Comedian, Writer
