Two devastating earthquakes have struck Venezuela. Donate today and British Airways will match every pound you give, up to £10,000.
Just after 6pm on Wednesday 24 June, two back-to-back earthquakes struck close to Venezuela's capital, Caracas. The second, magnitude 7.5, was the strongest to hit the country in more than a century.
Buildings were reduced to rubble in minutes.
Around 96,000 buildings are believed to have been damaged or destroyed. More than 2,200 people have been killed. Tens of thousands more are missing. The death toll is rising.
Millions of people have been affected, with more than two million in the worst impacted areas. Thousands are injured and need urgent medical care, but the country's hospitals are already overwhelmed. Aftershocks are continuing to hamper rescue efforts.
Many survivors are sleeping in makeshift tents on the street with little protection from the heat and rain. Roads, power lines, and critical infrastructure have been destroyed. Families are cut off from food, clean water, and essential services.
Venezuela was already facing a severe economic crisis before the earthquakes struck. The needs right now are overwhelming.
British Airways is match funding every donation made here, pound for pound, up to £10,000.
Your gift will go twice as far. Please give what you can.
DEC charities and their local partners have been working in Venezuela for many years. They moved quickly after the earthquakes struck, providing emergency medical treatment, delivering meals and food parcels, and getting clean drinking water to people who need it most.
British Red Cross has deployed ambulances in Caracas, mobilised search and rescue teams, and is preparing shelter facilities for people whose homes are no longer safe.
Plan International is working with local partners to provide essential relief items, psychosocial support for children and adolescents, and child protection services, with particular focus on girls.
More funds will help DEC charities reach more families on what will be a long road to recovery.
£10 could provide essential hygiene supplies to a family to prevent illness.
£25 could help provide emergency food support to a family for a week.
£50 could provide shelter kits for three families whose homes have been destroyed.
The UK Government is also matching donations to the DEC Venezuela Earthquake Appeal pound for pound up to £2 million through its UK Aid Match scheme. Combined with British Airways' match fund here on Crowdfunder, your donation has never stretched further.
