I'm Dave Nellist, a socialist former MP who will stand as an anti-austerity, anti-war TUSC candidate in the by-election for St Michaels ward in Coventry on Thursday, 10th October 2024. Download copies of our election leaflets and find out more about our campaign at https://linktr.ee/Dave4StMichaels
Labour has a big majority on the Council and now in Government - yet more cuts and closures!
The lights are switched off at night, making the streets less safe. Gas and electricity are going up, and the winter fuel allowance for the elderly is scrapped. The parking scheme in Charterhouse that the residents' association and the Socialist Councillors won for free is now being charged for. The benefit caps remain (and Keir Starmer has suspended our local MP because she opposed that). And now the Labour Council is talking of another £7 million worth of cuts in the months ahead!
Labour isn't Labour anymore - we need a Socialist councillor back on the council to fight for us.
If elected again, I would fight for every possible improvement for working people. In this rich country, everyone should be able to afford a warm home, have a well-paid job, and have access to free education and health while protecting our environment. If the system can't afford that, we need to change the system along socialist lines to one that works for us.
The gap between the rich and the rest of us has never been wider, but the difference between the major parties has never been narrower. Working-class people need a new party that stands up for us. And a new way of running the economy to benefit the majority, not the billionaires. Everyone should have a warm home, a well-paid job, free education and health, while protecting our environment. If the capitalist system can’t afford that, we need to change the system along socialist lines to one that works for us!
The money raised by this appeal will be used for my election campaign in St Michaels. Anything raised over and above what is needed for that campaign will be donated to the Coventry Socialist Party afterwards so that we can continue campaigning beyond the election for the same issues I am raising today.
