Aim
To spread awareness of the ecological crisis of Lough Neagh, and other natural crises created out of greed.
My name is Colleen Whitley - a student filmmaker and storyteller based in Belfast. I am the writer and director of The Daughters of the Lough, a surrealist fiction intervention into the ongoing ecological crisis of Lough Neagh, a freshwater lake in the North of Ireland that has been historically mismanaged through corporate neglect and absentee landlordism (Earl of Shaftesbury). This film is a reimagining of what happens when we take our collective power back and protect the land from corporations, who trade our future for a quick buck.
Why this film?
It is more important now than ever, to reimagine a future outside of capitalist extraction. As our earth cries out for us, we have to lean more into collectivist action, and I believe that Irish folk tale traditions of resistance can help us reimagine the future. There is a feminist lens to this film that makes it cathartic, emphasizing the very real message that we have to take our power back.
