Covid Vaccination

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected each and every one of us across the UK in many different ways. We are all likely to know someone who has suffered deeply as a result of the pandemic, whether from the disease itself, or perhaps the strain caused by the abrupt changes to our lives.

Over a year on from the initial outbreak, the Mass Vaccination Programme delivered by the NHS has given us all hope here in the UK that safety and normality may once again be on the horizon.

As a university student working from home, I took it upon myself when the programme was announced, to apply for a role as a vaccinator and give back what I could, to help us all out of this situation. Since April I have been working for the NHS in Somerset to help deliver vaccines to the public.

My first-hand experience of the vaccination programme has allowed me to directly observe the joy, and peace of mind, a jab has brought to so many people. We are all extremely lucky in the UK to have the opportunity to take up our vaccine offer, making the country a safer place.

However, the risk and threat to millions of people in less-developed countries around the world is still very evident. The current situation in India for example, where hospitals are overwhelmed and oxygen supplies are running out, show the seriousness the pandemic still poses globally. Our effort in the UK to overcome this pandemic will not be finished when everyone here is vaccinated. Not until every person globally has the opportunity to vaccinate themselves will we all be safe against this deadly disease.

By donating to my fundraising appeal, you will be giving money to Vaccinaid and UNICEF to help deliver the necessary vaccines to billions of people world-wide in lower-income countries.

Dartmoor 24hr Ultramarathon

In order to fundraise on behalf of Vaccinaid, I have entered the Dartmoor 24hr Trail Running Challenge on the 14th August, where I will endeavour to complete as many 11km laps in the available time.

As a relatively accomplished runner and cyclist, having completed endurance events such as a lockdown marathon in 2020, and a 340km bike ride on the Summer Solstice last year; I am used to suffering for an extended period of time. A 24hr ultramarathon is however a big step into the unknown for me. This will be a significant test of my physical strength and mental resilience to push on, particularly at 3am running through the night when my body wants to stop and go to sleep.

With 24 hours at my disposal to cover an 11km lap containing 283m of elevation gain, I have set myself the goal of covering 100km. By achieving this goal, I will have more than doubled my previous longest run and climbed the equivalent height of Ben Nevis, the UK's tallest mountain, twice. Ultimately, any distance past a marathon will be a success for me, so long as I keep moving for 24 hours.

Please, if you can, donate to this worthy cause and help the distribution of covid vaccines to those less fortunate that ourselves. Your money will directly help us all end this pandemic globally and spur me on to keep striving forward in the dark of night on a windswept tor in the middle of Dartmoor.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
