Aim
To fit out a Community Pavilion & provde a welcoming safe space for community groups including LGBTQ+ & Parkinsons to have a go at Croquet.
The sport of croquet has been proved to be ideal for Health and Wellbeing as well as socially inclusive. It is a non-contact sport able to be played from childhood until late in life. It can also be extremely competitive and strategic.
The Craig Y Don Croquet Club (a CASC) in North Wales has introduced a number of community groups to play croquet with great success and wants to do more with minority groups including disabled, wheelchair users, LGBTQ+ and others but current facilities are not yet suitable.
The club is 13 years old and has a membership approaching seventy in number 2/3rd are elderly ladies and the average is probably now 75. We are desparate to encourage younger members, families and those visiting groups all pat of our community objectives. (see website https://www.craig-y-doncroquetclub.com/)
The club along with a Bowls and Tennis club are also part of the Charity, The Craig Y Don Sports and Community Centre which over the past three years has raised the sum of £165,000 in grants and self funding to build a small bungalow as a Community Sports Pavilion next to the croquet lawn to allow the croquet club to achieve those objectives. The Pavilion is being built right now and due for completion before the end of 2026 and willbe managed by the Croquet club.
The design, plan and elevation shown above, already includes two disabled toilets suitable for sports wheelchairs, one being available externally via Radar Key 24/7 for local community use as well as all CYDS&CC members and visitors.
All buildings on site are owned by CYDS&CC which has a long-term renewable lease from Conwy BC for the whole property, but Croquet is required to fit out the pavilion with those contents being croquet assets.
A prime objective of the the overall Pavilion project is to introduce wheelchair croquet for all ages. Children have long enjoyed having a go as this old picture from the USA demonstrates.
Last year a local primary school asked the club to give an introduction to croquet to two year group of 9/10 year olds. nearly 130 small childrenhad great fun on the school field in a 40 minute lesson over a two day period. We want to offer that as a regular annual event to a numbr of our locl schools but currently our facilites don't meet the required H&S requirements, but they will next year!
I can't show you pictures of today's children, but the picture above is one of the hundred plus we received after the event whilst judging our sponsored poster competion on their croquet memories of that lesson!
This crowdfunding project's objectiveis to raise the £9,800 estimated to be required to modestly equip the built Pavilion for its intended purpose.
Please help us equip the new Sport Pavilion to bring more fun to our local community and those from far away! The pictures above and below shows club members in 'Alice in Wonderland' costumes hosting a vist of over 50 French visitors on a recent LlandudnoTown Twinning Day with residents of Wormhout.
This Crowd Funding effort if successful will be matched funded by Sport Wales.
We are asking for straight forward donations, gift aided please if you are a UK taxpayer as well as options on a range of Rewards at a bargain price. They range from £4.99 for a 2027 calendar showing pictures of the completed pavilion along with club members and visitors, to a Life Playing Membership at Craig Y Don Croquet club for £350.00.
The income we generate will add a hard wearing but comfortable surface to the concrete floor, a CCTV system for the Pavilion and the other club structures and facilities. From a single spare battery for our external facing defibrillator to baby changing facilities in the two WCs, one externally facing with Radar key opening, both suitable for sports wheelchairs. From white goods for the kitchen area plus crockery and cutlery for 40 folk along with stacking chairs and tables; free standing cabinets to three honour Boards for the lounge area. The boards will recognise the principle donors to the club, both organisations and individuals plus the individuals who have led the club from its inception in 2013.
Outside we have a decking and garden area which will contain furniture, plant displays and a portable flagpole arrangement. On 'occasions', we intend to fly the Union Jack alongside the Ukrainian flag and Welsh Dragon!
