Aim

To fund a family-friendly group cycle ride and picnic in Southsea, celebrating 100 years of Portsmouth as a cycling city!

Portsmouth Climate Action, together with supporting partners, are organising a family‑friendly, group cycle ride across Southsea.

The event will celebrate the joys and benefits of cycling!

The ride will also celebrate 100 years of cycling in Pompey since it became a city in 1926. Clubs such as Portsmouth CTC were set up in that year, and cycling became the most common way to commute for dockyard workers for decades.

We want to reclaim this heritage: Portsmouth was a cycling city for most of the 20th century and with a network of cycle lanes in place it could become one again.

Mostly we hope that this event will encourage families, children, older adults, and others who may not feel confident cycling on the road, to enjoy the experience of riding together in a supportive environment.

What we will use the money for

Funds raised will be used to secure Cycling UK membership and insurance cover for the event, organise the picnic and support promotional activities to help ensure strong community participation. We want to run a similar event every year, so any left over will be used for a ride in 2027.

If you are able to contribute, we would also warmly encourage you to consider volunteering as a ride steward on the day.
