Aim

Offering a platform for artists to address the lack of representation of British Asians in Arts & Culture, through a live event & workshop.

CUT THE BAKWAAS is an unapologetic coming together and celebration of our diverse, colourful and extraordinary lives, through art - often misheard or misunderstood in wider British culture.

We will explore our stories through multidisciplinary artworks, performances and a panel discussion with a line up of inspirational British Asian creatives.

The event will be followed by a networking workshop for a select group of British Asian creatives, to help them build confidence and to support structures that come with being part of a community.

We want younger generations to experience a unified and collaborative culture.

The event will highlight issues surrounding our community, and address the lack of representation of South Asians, which still exists in arts and culture today.

#CutTheBakwaas has encouraged us to consider wider issues of diversity and accessibility. This will shape how we curate, promote and host the event, and will inform our future work. Funding will mean that we can ensure that we can make the event accessible to reach a wider, diverse audience.

We have been fortunate enough to have won the venue space (including venue hire, staffing and technical support) through the ‘Pitch To The Mix’ prize, which has been funded by Rich Mix and Livity.

In kind support raised from Rich Mix and Livity: £3,925

The positioning of Rich Mix, as an internationally recognised arts centre, means that we will have access to a wide audience, and be able to bring visibility to the artists we work with.

This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we hope to produce our event at a high quality to champion the diaspora. It is important to us to prove that our community can achieve artistic excellence, setting a blueprint to inspire our audience members and the next generation of young creatives to action change in the arts world.
