Aim: To build a dedicated CRRU equipment HQ

Formed in 1997, CRRU is a small non-profit research organisation based in northeast Scotland working for the welfare, conservation and protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) through scientific investigation, environmental education, and the provision of a 24 hour veterinary service for sick, injured and stranded individuals.

We are currently looking to raise a momentous £45,000 to build a CRRU equipment storage HQ to house the charity's dedicated marine wildlife rescue and research equipment (boats, vehicles, veterinary trailers and ATV etc).

As well as providing vital indoor storage and safety for this equipment, the sought-after 12 x 16 metre steel-frame portal unit will also provide further opportunities for staff and volunteer training, and facilitate more rapid mobilisation of teams and equipment to stranded whales and dolphins in trouble (serving as a pre-prepped emergency hub for the charity’s veterinary rescue team).

Habitat destruction, pollution and the spread of disease and noise have all been cast as causes for marine mammal strandings and it is argued that climate change will further exacerbate these issues. Assessing the full welfare implications of climate change calls for innovative and careful application of welfare science to which the CRRU charity is fully committed through its ongoing research and conservation work and its response to incidental whale and dolphin strandings in NE Scotland.
