Aim: To install a 6 foot aluminium Tommy silhouette in Altrincham town centre to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice.

2018 marks the centenary of the Armistice, the agreement signed between the Allies and Germany that signalled the end of the First World War.

The war cost the lives of nine million soldiers and seven million civilians, and Altrincham certainly bore its share of loss.

Indeed, by November 1918, of the 161 residents of just one Altrincham road - Chapel Street - who had fought in the trenches, 29 had been killed in action with a further 20 to succumb to their injuries. it was a sacrifice that led King George V to call it the "bravest little street in England".

To mark this momentous centenary, the Remembered charity has launched the There But Not There project to commemorate the end of the Great War.

Described as a Nationwide Installation for the Fallen, the project includes the opportunity to buy a 6 ft aluminium silhouette of a First World War Tommy.

Money raised from the sale of these silhouettes will go towards a campaign to raise £15million for Armed Forces and mental health charities.

We think that Altrincham should have one of these silhouette installations in the town centre, most likely close to Chapel Street.

We're calling on the Altrincham community to donate whatever they can afford to raise the £750 needed to buy a silhouette, on the basis that it would be a thought-provoking and powerful reminder of the sacrifice made by so many a century ago.
