Support Ukranian families within our local Community

by Treasurer in Livingston, West Lothian, United Kingdom

Crofthead Management Committee have been at the forefront of supporting the Ukrainians’ displaced through war. Lead by a second generation Ukraine resident Charis, who understands the displacement and trauma experienced by victims of war through her grandads lived experiences as a result of  the 2nd world war.

Many people have gone over and above by welcoming Ukrainians into their homes. Unfortunately, many Ukrainians are displaced temporarily in hotels throughout West Lothian with no end in sight. Between temporary housing and host families the estimate is around 140 families displaced in the west Lothian area

Those housed and those awaiting homes have been forced to adapt to their new environments. To adjust to an entirely different way of living life. They have all lost their homes. Their jobs. Their sense of identity. And sadly, many have lost their loved ones

As a community we want to support them. We want to offer them resources within our welcoming community centre that will enhance their wellbeing. A place where they can socialize and build connections. Most importantly a space where they can come together for social support to process their losses and trauma of fleeing war

To date as a community we have:

  • supported the Ukrainians with a pop up shop full of clothing, toiletries, and place to reconnect and meet up informally etc.
  • A Local Livingston Business CSI  Storage solutions has supported by adding shelving to our container to make it easier to organise and display items within the container
  • 33 bikes have been given to refugees through the West Lothian Bike Lending Library
  • The Ukrainian public sector group have funded the rent of the container which hosts the pop up shop
  • We have supported local volunteering opportunities for Ukrainians to support their health wellbeing whilst in hotel accommodation
  • Working with ReUsing IT and WLC adult learning services – we  have delivered 10 repurposed laptops for children in hotel accommodation to support schooling
  • We have secured some funding from West Lothian Food Network to feed our Ukrainian volunteers and for refreshments at out pop up shop  events

We can build on what we have achieved so far, but to do this we need your support from the business community.

Any donated funds will be used to:

  • Support the families with their daily day to day needs - ie nappies, toiletries, clothing, food, transport, IT equipment and digital connectivity whilst in temporary accommodation whether this is within hotels and/or  host families
  • support those moving into sustainable accommodation, volunteering, employment, education and training
  • Support the mental health and well-being of the  refugees by supporting them with a safe friendly space to socialise and build connections, and most importantly space to process their losses and trauma of fleeing war.

Crofthead Management Committee will work in partnership with West Lothians Council Services to ensure there is a collaborative approach and avoid duplication. This fund is intended to provide ‘added value’ to work already undertaken and committed.

As we have seen at Crofthead  the refugees are very eager to give back to our community, but for them to be able to give back we have to give them a chance first of all

Got an idea like this?

Over £200 million has been raised from our crowd to support the projects they love! Plus tens of millions more unlocked by our partners.
